Faced with such an egregious erosion of their working conditions, Local 802 Broadway musicians and other artists are ready to leverage every ounce of their collective power, up to and including a strike.""
"Leonardo Reyna is part of the cast of "Buena Vista Social Club." He spoke with our sister station WABC ahead of what could be one of his last performances before a strike. "Even though I'm here contracted as an actor, I'm part of the union of musicians and my heart is always with the music," Reyna said. He said he knows what it means to be an actor and a musician."
Broadway musicians' union contract expired at the end of August and members threaten to strike if no settlement is reached by Thursday morning. Negotiations continued late Wednesday with a mediator seeking agreement. The union says the Broadway League is demanding wage cuts, threatens healthcare benefits, and could cause job losses, prompting Local 802 musicians and artists to prepare to use collective power, including a strike. Nearly all of the roughly 1,200 Broadway musicians signed an Oct. 1 letter with demands. A strike would likely shut down more than 20 Broadway shows. The last major Broadway strike in 2007 lasted 19 days and caused millions in lost revenue.
