"It's the only tram in New York," Paravati says. "So that's unique in itself." The tram provides a unique transportation experience that connects its riders with their city.
Paravati takes the time to sit with those who are scared, hold their hand, and talk with them through the entire ride. "I just say, 'Look at me, don't look outside.'" His personal touch enhances the experiences of anxious passengers.
One day, when Paravati was training a new operator, the new operator looked at Paravati and told him that he knew Paravati, but Paravati did not know him. It turns out that 18 years prior, when the new operator's mother was pregnant with him, she needed to get to the hospital. Paravati made a special trip for her and had an ambulance waiting at the terminal.
Paravati's connections with passengers have a lasting impact, highlighted when his past act of kindness came full circle. "How about that?" says Paravati. "And he still works here!"
