Security closes Hugh L. Carey Tunnel for UN General Assembly
Briefly

The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel is temporarily closed for security during the UN General Assembly, with all lanes shut until noon Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Originally opened in 1950, the tunnel connects Hamilton Ave. in Red Hook to the Battery, the southernmost tip of Manhattan.
The tunnel was renamed in honor of Gov. Hugh L. Carey, who significantly contributed to New York's recovery from the fiscal crisis of the 1970s.
Carey served as a Congressmember for Park Slope/Sunset Park seven terms and later became New York's 51st governor.
