Pawpaws: Fruit of the elusive, native plant grow wild on Staten Island . . . and now's the time to find them
Briefly

Pawpaws are super-sweet, luscious fruits bursting with an unusual flavor - a creamy, kind of custardy orange with bursts of banana and floral undertone, plus a mouthfeel similar to that of a papaya.
Fruit should be eaten after they fall - preferably not while on the branch - as their drop comes just when perfectly ripe.
Pawpaw trees can be identified by their floppy leaves and, by early fall, with the appearance of those yummy, teardrop-like fruits.
Its fruit pairs nicely with strawberries for a zabaglione. Pawpaws can also be turned into ice cream, a good fit for its already creamy palate sensation.
