Cadence, a Southern vegan restaurant in the East Village famous for its plant-based twists on Black culinary traditions, is set to close due to a significant rent increase. The restaurant will remain open until the end of summer, despite its lease not expiring for a couple of months. Founded by chef Shenarri Freeman in 2021, Cadence received high praise, including two James Beard nominations and recognition for the best solo dining experience. Chef Haley Duren currently oversees the restaurant, which will continue hosting events until its closure.
Cadence was built to honor the richness of Black culinary tradition and the beauty of plant-based Southern cooking. What we created here, with our community, has meant more than words can capture.
Freeman received two James Beard nominations for the restaurant. And, in 2021, Eater New York awarded it the best solo dining experience of the year, for its bar seating with dishes like its deep-fried lasagna.
