Many Angelenos were first introduced to northern Mexican tacos de carne asada wrapped in flour tortillas at the corner of First Street and Beaudry around 2009. Chef Esdras Ochoa's Mexicali Taco & Co. was an instant hit, serving Mexicali-style carne asada grilled on the street to the late-night bar crowd.
A lot of people don't know it, but my parents started selling Mexicali-style carne asada with handmade flour tortillas... I always wondered what my parents' truck could have accomplished if we had the capability of letting people know about their food with the reach that we have on social media.
Now, after nine years in business, enduring the pandemic, and dealing with other setbacks, Asadero Chikali opened its first brick-and-mortar restaurant on September 4 inside Inglewood's Century Plaza with an expanded menu of tacos, vampiros, quesadillas, and quesatacos.
The strip mall taquería has 24 seats inside, with 8 additional seats outside, located next to SoFi Stadium and the Hollywood Park Casino. Asadero Chikali will continue to operate its trailer in East LA, but will shut down its Boyle Heights guisados stand to focus on the newly opened Inglewood restaurant.
