Chef Oscar Lorenzzi, born in Lima, opened Nuyores in the West Village at 154 West 13th Street on August 26. Lorenzzi previously co-owned and served as executive chef of Contento in East Harlem, which opened in 2021 and closed in late 2024 due to unsustainable business conditions. Hospitality partner Jonathan Charnay will oversee wines. Nuyores occupies the former Il Totano space and offers Peruvian and Chifa dishes including quinotto, ceviches, arroz con pato, black chimichurri octopus, lamb ribs with anticucho, and South American–leaning wines. Michelin Guide Northeast winners will be announced November 18 in Philadelphia, covering several major cities.
The former chef of Contento - the East Harlem Peruvian restaurant known for being accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities - opened a new spot this week. The also-Peruvian Nuyores debuts in the West Village at 154 West 13th Street, near Seventh Avenue, on Tuesday, August 26. Chef Oscar Lorenzzi, who was born in Lima, Peru, had been the co-owner and executive chef of East Harlem Peruvian restaurant Contento, which opened in 2021 with wine professional Yannick Benjamin, garnering acclaim from the New York Times, Esquire, and Eater.
Lorenzzi is opening Nuyores with hospitality partner Jonathan Charnay (formerly beverage director of omakase Masa), who will oversee the wines. They took over the space that formerly housed short-lived restaurant Il Totano from Top Chef winner Harold Dieterle, which closed in January.
Nuyores will serve Peruvian dishes, with some familiar favorites from Contento, including the quinotto (quinoa risotto). Elsewhere, there are ceviches, arroz con pato (rice with duck), black chimichurri octopus, lamb ribs with anticucho, as well as Chifa (Chinese Peruvian) items. Wines lean South American, too.
