Following President Trump's executive order dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), urgent requests for assistance have surged among Uganda's LGBTQ community. Andrea Minaj Casablanca, a counselor supporting this marginalized group, faces her own struggles after losing her job funded by USAID. The situation worsened with the 2023 law imposing severe penalties on same-sex relations, and activists warn that funding cuts have led to severe underfunding of shelters and vital medical supplies. As a result, many LGBTQ individuals in Uganda report heightened feelings of depression and anxiety, facing increased discrimination and violence.
Andrea Minaj Casablanca described her situation after the USAID cuts, stating, 'Our whole world has been turned upside down. Everyone is in fear of the future.'
Activists emphasize that the cuts to USAID funding have drastically increased risks for LGBTQ individuals in Uganda, with shelters underfunded and many in danger of violence.
