The Shirley Chisholm Recreational Center, nearing completion in East Flatbush, aims to fill a recreational void in Central Brooklyn. Offering a range of facilities including a half-Olympic swimming pool, basketball courts, and dance studios, the center focuses on both sports and arts. It aims to provide access to after-school programming and childcare while encouraging community engagement. Officials highlight the importance of developing such a space to enhance childrenâs self-esteem and well-being, especially in a neighborhood where youth often lack safe leisure options.
"It's important that kids see something beautiful being built for them, for their self-esteem, for them to see they deserve this," said Francois Fortune-Blanchard.
"When you look at a map of rec centers throughout the city there is definitely a void in this Central Brooklyn area so the placement is really important," said NYC DDC deputy director of Cultural Institutions Daphne Lansky.
