Hungary's government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has enacted a law that effectively bans Pride Marches in the country, citing claims of protecting children. This new legislation imposes hefty fines on organizers and participants, while also incorporating facial recognition technology for enforcement. In protest, members of the Momentum Movement have taken action in Parliament, burning flares and disrupting proceedings. Critics, including Budapest Pride and Amnesty International, have condemned the law as a direct attack on LGBTI rights and a move towards fascism, especially alarming ahead of the 30th anniversary of Budapest Pride.
This is not child protection, this is fascism. The government is trying to restrict peaceful protests with a critical voice by targeting a minority.
The law is a full-frontal attack on the LGBTI community and a blatant violation of Hungary's obligations to prohibit discrimination and guarantee freedom of expression.
