Michele Fitzsimmons was promoted to Deputy Chief at FDNY, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold that position in fire operations. During a ceremony at Queens College, Fitzsimmons, with 24 years of experience, emphasized the significance of her promotion for inspiring young girls. Alongside Fitzsimmons, numerous others were promoted within the fire department. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker noted the impact Fitzsimmons had made since their first meeting, highlighting her pedigree in fire service. The event celebrated both individual achievements and a growing representation of women in firefighting roles.
I've been fortunate to work in a lot of great places. That made a real difference in my career, and it's an exciting moment for me because I feel like it's an opportunity for young girls to see what's possible.
I really love my job as a Battalion Chief, but I feel it's an important thing to happen in the department for a woman to be in the rank of Deputy Chief.
