The Georgian government has passed a law that severely restricts LGBTQ+ rights, allowing for the banning of Pride events and nullifying same-sex marriages, amid low public support for queer identities.
Tamara Jakeli, director of Tbilisi Pride, stated the bill represents "the most terrible thing to happen to the LGBT community in Georgia," potentially forcing their organization to shut down.
The bill's proponents argue it protects so-called 'traditional moral standards', reflecting the influence of the conservative Orthodox Church on public policy and perception of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Georgia's President Salome Zourabichvili opposes the legislation, but the ruling Georgian Dream party likely has enough parliamentary support to override any veto she might attempt.
