On March 2, 2025, a devastating three-alarm fire engulfed a home in Jamaica, Queens, resulting in the death of a 55-year-old man. The fire erupted around 11 a.m. at a two-story residence, prompting a rapid response from Engine Company 275 and Ladder Company 133. Heavy smoke and flames impeded rescue efforts, but firefighters were able to retrieve the injured man, who later died at Jamaica Hospital. Aside from the fatality, five others sustained minor injuries, and gusty winds complicated firefighting efforts, including the discovery of a burning propane tank and a lithium-ion battery at the scene.
While searching through the heavy smoke, firefighters encountered a critically injured 55-year-old man who suffered from smoke inhalation. They were able to retrieve him.
Gusty conditions made battling the fire particularly challenging, as the wind exacerbated the flames and smoke, creating a hazardous environment for responders.
Witnesses described the blaze as intense, stating that the whole back of the buildings was bright orange and smoke was blowing strongly, complicating efforts.
Firefighters recovered a lithium-ion battery at the scene and are investigating its potential link to the fire, signifying the complexity of fire causes.
