Exclusive | 'You' showrunners reveal shocking alternate ending for the Penn Badgley thriller
Briefly

In the final season of "You," Joe Goldberg's violent journey culminates in his capture and imprisonment after a series of manipulative actions and crimes. The season sees Joe returning to New York City where, despite being married, he becomes entangled in an affair with Bronte, a woman with ulterior motives. Showrunner Michael Foley reveals that the writers aimed to ensure Joe faced consequences without redeeming him, ultimately locking in his fate late in the season. The ending underscores Joe's refusal to take responsibility, illustrating his continued denial of accountability for his past actions.
We hadn't landed on [his ending] until very late in the season. Throughout the series, there was a shared belief among the writers and the creators that Joe wouldn't get away with his crimes.
We liked putting him in a veritable cage [in prison]. We liked him not knowing the touch of a lover.
Having the chance to have his pithy coda, and of course put [the blame] on everybody else, rather than himself was key.
We came into the season knowing that we didn't want to redeem him, that he would get his comeuppance.
