BED-STUY, a mental health support center in Brooklyn, is actively aiding residents in crisis by offering job training and meals, fostering a supportive community. Operated by Services for the Underserved, the facility currently assists about 250 individuals but aims to expand its services to 600, thanks to increased city funding. This initiative forms a key part of the city's broader mental health strategy, emphasizing early intervention to prevent escalations in crisis situations, as highlighted by Mayor Adams during a recent visit.
"This is the upstream. Downstream is what you see in the subway, with people believing they can only live on the street. So this is the preventive step," Adams said.
"Sometimes when we cry, we cry of joy, not of sorrow," she said.
