Tiny melodies': musician uses moths' flight data to compose piece about their decline
Briefly

Moths, important pollinators that come out at night, have inspired a new music piece titled Moth x Human, composed using their flight data. Ellie Wilson assigned sounds to 80 resident moth species, triggered by their landings on her monitor. This automated melody was combined with performances by live musicians. The project raises awareness of declining moth populations due to habitat loss and other factors, illustrating the ecosystem's reliance on these insects, crucial for various species and pollination. The music highlights the stark difference in moth populations across different habitats.
I wanted to compose a piece of music that was, in part, created by the insects themselves, said Wilson. The moths randomly created these little tiny melodies...
Many of us don't see moth numbers declining because they come out at night but they're just as vital to our ecosystem as bees and butterflies, said Wilson.
