South Korea's Supreme Court dismissed a copyright claim of 30 million won regarding the children's song 'Baby Shark'. Composer Jonathan Wright alleged that the 2015 hit by SmartStudy copied his 2011 version. The court ruled that Wright's rendition was not original enough for copyright protection and upheld earlier decisions. Pinkfong's version became globally popular after its release and has garnered over 16 billion views. The court affirmed that both songs are based on a traditional children's melody widely known in US summer camps.
The Supreme Court accepted the lower court's finding that the plaintiff's song did not involve substantial modifications to the folk tune related to the case.
Pinkfong stated that the court's ruling confirmed 'Baby Shark' was based on a traditional singalong chant that has entered the public domain.
