Mariah Carey has prevailed in a copyright lawsuit claiming she copied her holiday hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" from a 1989 country song of the same name. Judge Monica Almadani ruled that the plaintiffs, songwriters Vince Vance and Troy Powers, did not adequately prove that the songs were sufficiently similar. Carey's legal team argued that common Christmas themes found in both songs rendered them distinct, and Almadani's decision even required the plaintiffs to cover part of Carey's attorney costs due to frivolous claims.
U.S. District Judge Monica Almadani ruled that the songwriters failed to prove their claims, stating that the two songs were not similar enough for copyright infringement.
Carey's response highlighted that the elements in both songs are common to many Christmas songs, arguing that their song was "completely different" from the country version.
