After months of working on the follow-up to 2000's 'All That You Can't Leave Behind', the project imploded when they decided to fire producer Chris Thomas.
Steve Lillywhite told The Post that U2 felt bad about letting Chris Thomas go, citing their image as great employers, yet they needed someone to bring energy.
With hit singles like 'Vertigo', 'Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own', and 'City of Blinding Lights', the album went multiplatinum and won eight Grammys.
Lillywhite noted that when the band saw him, they perked up, feeling a sense of nostalgia and energy that helped revitalize their approach.
