Recording took place at Albarn's Studio 13 in London, his studio in Devon, and sites across India, Turkmenistan, Syria, and major U.S. cities. Artists perform in Arabic, English, Hindi, Spanish, and Yoruba. Contributors include Idles, Kara Jackson, Yasiin Bey, Johnny Marr, Black Thought, Anoushka Shankar, and Omar Souleyman. The album also incorporates sampled or archival vocals from several deceased figures. A UK and Ireland tour will follow.
