Ethel Cain, whose real name is Hayden Anhedönia, will conclude her singer-songwriter persona with the release of her new album, Willoughby Tucker. Cain, a trans indie singer, has recorded as Ethel since 2019, initially reflecting on her strict religious upbringing and personal traumas. The new album explores her insecurities in love, marking a shift from previous themes. While acknowledging valid backlash regarding past controversial posts, she is pursuing legal action against what she considers a smear campaign. After 27 years of life experiences, she's ready to close the chapter on Ethel Cain and seek new directions in her career.
Ethel was my scapegoat: she kept running and ended up chained to a bed in an attic. If I'm the good ending, she's the bad one.
Preacher's Daughter was speaking on my experience in the Church and as a child. Willoughby Tucker is more of my insecurities and frustrations and fears and inadequacies in love.
Now, after this record is over, we are officially closing that chapter. I built Ethel Cain, based [on] 27 years of life.
I have to go back out now and live and get more experience.
