Google has officially announced its new experimental "AI Mode" for web searches, which aims to enhance user interactivity by utilizing the Gemini 2.0 chatbot. This groundbreaking feature allows users to pose complex queries and receive comprehensive, AI-generated responses, making search queries more intuitive and deeper. According to product VP Robby Stein, this mode is expected to meet the needs of power users who desire advanced reasoning and nuanced answers without the need for multiple searches. Currently, AI Mode is available as a small-scale opt-in experiment.
This new search mode expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities so you can get help with even your toughest questions.
You can ask nuanced questions that might have previously taken multiple searches - like exploring a new concept or comparing detailed options - and get a helpful AI-powered response.
AI Mode is a small-scale opt-in Google Labs experiment, at least for now. AI Overviews also started life as a Labs experiment.
We may very well be looking at the future of Google Search: An AI-first experience that surfaces content not from across the web directly.
