San Francisco's Sen. Scott Wiener and Mayor Daniel Lurie will announce the reintroduction of the SAFE Streets Act. This bill permits local police to enforce the sales of suspected stolen goods by vendors on city streets. It outlines penalties for vendors lacking necessary permits or proof of purchase, shifting enforcement from Public Works to law enforcement. Supporters argue it counters criminal activities damaging local businesses and public safety, while the bill does not target food vendors with proper permits. The act revises previous legislation that decriminalized street vending in California.
"Criminal organizations are fueling retail theft and bringing violence and chaos to our streets, displacing legitimate street vendors, harming local businesses, and undermining public safety."
"The SAFE Streets Act holds these disruptors accountable and allows our communities to flourish," said Wiener in a press release on Monday.
"If a vendor is selling one of those items and does not have a vending permit, or proof of purchase, the merchant is subject to an infraction."
"The bill gives the police the ability to enforce these rules instead of Public Works employees... who have been subject to harassment while on the job."
