Today marks the final opportunity for residents in District 3 of San Jose to register for the special election occurring on April 8. Eligible voters can register online or, if they miss the deadline, can vote in person on the same day at designated locations. There are seven candidates vying for the council seat following the resignation of former Councilmember Omar Torres amid serious legal allegations. The new councilmember will address pressing issues like homelessness and city recovery post-pandemic.
"Your vote counts, whether it's a federal election or a local election," he said in a statement. "We encourage all eligible residents to register before today's deadline to ensure you receive your vote by mail ballot in time for election day."
The election is a result of disgraced former Councilmember Omar Torres' arrest and resignation last November. Torres pleaded not guilty to child molestation charges earlier this month.
If no candidate receives a simple majority vote, a runoff election will be held June 24.
