State law blocks potential San Jose flea market site - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

Vendors from the San Jose Berryessa Flea Market believe relocating to a former landfill site is their best option, but state legislation complicates matters. The Singleton site, favored due to its location, requires an exemption from the California Surplus Land Act to proceed without prioritizing affordable housing. Despite city officials advocating for exemption based on economic benefits, recent feedback suggests they might face resistance. The site also needs substantial environmental cleanup, which could delay any potential move, leaving many small business owners uncertain about their future.
"Initial indications from the Housing and Community Development Department indicate it is not inclined to exempt the site," Nanci Klein stated, underscoring the challenges ahead.
"So it could leave our vendors high and dry for a while during the time in which we're remediating that site or exploring other solutions," said District 5 Councilmember Peter Ortiz.
