Shuggie's serves up pizza, pinot and hot live jazz
Briefly

Shuggie's Trash Pie & Natural Wine, run by Kayla Abe and David Murphy, is becoming a notable jazz spot in San Francisco's Mission district, presenting local musicians through collaboration with Jazz In the Neighborhood (JItN). The couple, passionate about music, has created a space that allows visitors to enjoy quality jazz performances without leaving their establishment. They have hosted top Bay Area talent on designated evenings, building a sense of community and excitement, while simultaneously supporting musicians in their quest for fair wages.
"As a couple, we love going out to see live music ... and we thought, maybe we can bring that music to us," says Abe, adding that Murphy's Austin upbringing imbued a passion for easy access to music.
"We've been lucky to have a good reach, but there are always pockets that you haven't touched," says Abe, describing how word has spread around the scene.
On a tiny stage set in a window box with a vintage motorcycle, one of the region's most widely admired saxophonists, Kasey Knudsen, delivered a duo set with guitarist Eric Vogler.
Music fans at the counter paid close attention as Knudsen deconstructed 'All the Things You Are,' while a couple of convivial parties at tables paused to applaud.
