San Francisco officials are looking to meet California's housing mandates by expanding residential development into the typically single-family home areas of the Sunset and Richmond districts. With a requirement to build over 82,000 new apartments by 2031, there is a proposal to allow six to eight-story apartment buildings along major thoroughfares, with some areas potentially allowing skyscrapers up to 65 stories. This broad rezoning aims to enhance resource access for residents in these neighborhoods, as officials stress that housing should be developed in well-resourced areas.
If the city were to plan for housing in those areas, the people eventually living there would have access to better resources, such as public transit, parks, high-performing public schools, retail, and community facilities.
We have already rezoned many parts of the southern and eastern neighborhoods. While we can continue to look for more opportunities to add housing in those areas, the state is requiring that the emphasis of this rezoning and the majority of units be placed in the well-resourced neighborhoods.
City officials are considering opening these northern and western neighborhoods to apartments six to eight stories tall along major streets, with some large boulevards going up to 65 stories tall near the city's downtown.
The bulk of the proposed rezoning would stretch from Russian Hill to Parkside and includes commercial corridors like 19th Avenue, Geary Boulevard and Clement Street.
