Advocacy groups are urging the Alameda County Sheriff's Office to terminate its $252 million contract with Wellpath for jail healthcare, citing inadequate services and performance issues. During a recent Board of Supervisors meeting, representatives from several organizations highlighted the benefits of using the county's public health system instead. They argue that other counties successfully manage their own jail healthcare, and local governance could ensure better care for incarcerated individuals. The movement comes after critical audits raised concerns about Wellpath's effectiveness.
"Wellpath's allegiance is to their shareholders. I know Alameda County can do better than this," Duxbury said, emphasizing the need for local healthcare services over for-profit providers.
"I have not been pleased with Wellpath's performance, and I’ve wanted to have the county explore if they are in breach of contract," said Supervisor Miley.
