San Jose has transformed a block of Post Street into its second pedestrian mall, aiming to enhance nightlife and community engagement, as celebrated by Mayor Matt Mahan. Local business owners express excitement over new opportunities for outdoor seating and events, hoping to revitalize the area into a vibrant public space akin to San Pedro Square. Plans for upcoming large events like the Super Bowl and World Cup matches are invigorating local entrepreneurs to support one another. The street has historic ties to the LGBTQ+ community, making this development significant for the diverse culture of the city.
Mayor Matt Mahan stated, "We've sometimes been overshadowed by our big neighbor to the north when it comes to nightlife and activation, but the era of San Jose being the less cool cousin to the south is over."
George Gonzalez from The Club remarked, "When we heard the news right away my mind was like 'what are we doing, how are we going to capitalize on this?'"
Dayna Moya Gonzalez expressed, "To be born and raised in the city and not have one but two businesses here is just a dream come true for us."
Gonzalez highlighted the importance of outdoor space saying, "The hope is Post Street can be a public space for more entertainment and gatherings like San Pedro Square."
