San Jose approves hundreds of affordable homes at historic site - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

After nearly ten years of planning, the Gateway Tower will add 220 affordable apartments to San Jose's SoFA district. The project, now 100% affordable, includes 55 supportive housing units and 165 for very low-income families. Despite the Historical Landmark Commission recommending against demolishing parts of Herrold College, planning officials approved the project, citing financial burdens related to preservation. The project developers indicated that retaining the historical site would hinder financial viability, while preserving the facades of historic buildings aims to maintain the neighborhood's character.
The applicant stated that preservation of the city landmark building presents multiple challenges to the development of the site, creating economic hardship.
The project is doing the right thing in terms of committing to the historical significance of the site, while also addressing affordable housing needs.
