Viliami Ofanoa, jailed for two years awaiting trial for the March 2021 murder of Robert Franklin Currier, was acquitted by a jury, maintaining his innocence. Convicted only of firearm possession, he served the time already spent in custody. The case hinged on evidence from phone records and DNA related to the shooting, but Ofanoa contended he was coerced by the actual shooter. Despite having his story dismissed by authorities, the jury's decision reflected a careful analysis of the evidence, leading to his release shortly before his birthday.
This was a sad and difficult case, and I know the jurors worked hard to carefully and objectively examine every piece of evidence presented to them, Miller said.
All three of those things more or less amounted to what Ofanoa readily admitted to the cops; that he was present in an SUV that carried Currier's killer.
