McDonald's building in California, 2nd-oldest in US, may get historic status
"Kroc got involved in 1955 as a franchise agent before buying out the brothers in 1961. McDonald's now has more than 45,000 restaurants all over the world. "We've got No. 7," Geoff Starns, Pomona City Hall's planning manager, said with satisfaction. "And," boasts Mike Schowalter, president of the Historical Society of the Pomona Valley, "it's the second-oldest standing today.""
A small donut shop at 1057 E. Mission Blvd. in Pomona contains architectural features tied to early McDonald’s history. The building was among the earliest McDonald’s locations, created by Dick and Maurice “Mac” McDonald in San Bernardino as a fast walk-up hamburger stand using an assembly line process. The first McDonald’s opened on Dec. 22, 1948, and the brothers later rebuilt the concept in 1953 with the “Golden Arches” design and franchising. McDonald’s expanded through multiple cities, including Pomona and Azusa. Ray Kroc became involved in 1955 and bought out the brothers in 1961, after which the chain grew to more than 45,000 restaurants worldwide. Pomona’s site is described as the second-oldest standing today and is being considered for historic landmark status.
