Channing Way apartment fire displaces one near Berkeley High School

On Thursday evening, Berkeley firefighters responded to a fire in a two-story apartment building on Channing Way. Multiple 911 calls were received around 6:50 p.m. Fire crews found black smoke emanating from an apartment. Fortunately, the resident was already outside and transported to the hospital for observation. The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter, with damage estimated at $40,000. The cause remains under investigation, and the American Red Cross was called to assist the displaced resident. Police facilitated road closures during the firefighting efforts, which concluded before 8 p.m.
When fire crews arrived, they found black smoke coming from an apartment, he said. The person living at that apartment was already outside, and was sent to a hospital for observation.
Firefighters had the fire knocked down by 7:02 and under control by 7:10, May said. The damage from the fire was estimated at $40,000, and the cause is still under investigation.
