117-Year-Old Central Drug Store, Oldest Store in the Excelsior, Closing Permanently in July
Briefly

Central Drug Store, a staple for 117 years in the Excelsior District, is set to permanently close on July 15. Owner Jerry Tonelli, who has run the store since his father's passing, announced his retirement. The store has served generations of customers and has a rich history of family involvement. As the oldest retail outlet in the area, it has successfully competed against large pharmacy chains and valuable community ties. With no family members to continue the business, Tonelli's retirement symbolizes a poignant shift in local retail dynamics.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement. We are a small, but mighty, pharmacy. And we are proud to say that we outlasted Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid and mail order services.
We've had pretty much the same customers over the years, and then their children, and then their children's children. It’s just a whole cycle of life that we've seen come through here.
