Elon Musk-owned social network X has significantly revised its API pricing, raising the basic tier from $100 to $200 monthly while also offering annual subscription discounts. The changes include higher limits and new endpoints.
Despite the introduction of new limits like increasing reads from 10,000 to 15,000 for the basic tier, there are discrepancies as the API comparison page still showcases previous limits. This inconsistency suggests an error that the company has yet to rectify.
The company is also unveiling a reduced free tier, where post limits are cut from 1,500 to 500 and the read API permits only 100 requests. This drastic reduction adversely affects developers reliant on the free tier.
As X tightens its grip on API access by introducing new restrictions like limiting monthly top-ups to two across tiers, developers express a shift to more open networks like Mastodon, signaling a disintegration of the third-party tool ecosystem created for X.
