In 1945, Boston University President Daniel L. Marsh honored 223 students and alumni who lost their lives in WWII, stating they died for democracy, religious freedom, and freedom of speech."
Despite President Marsh's declaration about a memorial on campus, it never materialized, leaving the memories of the 223 largely forgotten until Michael Tozeski unearthed the names of 221 of them, including Red Cross worker Margaret Gillum.
Tozeski's archival work not only honors the sacrifices made during WWII but also serves as a reminder of the values those lives were protecting - our freedoms and democracy.
The staggering casualty statistics from WWII highlight the broad impact of the war across many nations, with estimates of total deaths ranging between 50 to 85 million people.
