Winter solstice 2024: The shortest day of the year is arriving
Briefly

The winter solstice occurs in the Northern Hemisphere on Saturday, Dec. 21, marking the shortest day and the longest night of the year as the Earth is tilted away from the Sun.
At 4:20 a.m. ET, the solstice will officially occur, signaling the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere due to Earth's axial tilt.
With the solstice comes a varying amount of daylight: locations farther north, like Alaska, experience minimal sunlight, while southern areas like Florida enjoy more light.
NASA states, 'All locations north of the equator see daylight shorter than 12 hours and all locations south see daylight longer than 12 hours' during the winter solstice.
