President Trump recently signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America', pressuring the Associated Press (AP) to adopt this terminology. When AP refused, two reporters were barred from White House events. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the action, asserting the White House’s authority over press access. Julie Pace of AP condemned the move as a violation of the First Amendment, and the White House Correspondents Association deemed it unacceptable, emphasizing the need for independent media reporting.
It is alarming that the Trump administration would punish AP for its independent journalism.
Limiting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of AP's speech not only severely impedes the public's access to independent news, it plainly violates the First Amendment.
We reserve the right to decide who gets into the Oval Office; it is a privilege to cover the White House.
The White House cannot dictate how news organisations report the news.
