The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed a rare whale sighting in the East River, though it remains unclear if it was a humpback or an endangered North Atlantic right whale. Footage captured near the Williamsburg Bridge shows the whale but does not clarify its species. The Coast Guard noted such sightings are unusual but more probable with the presence of North Atlantic whales in waters off Long Island this summer.
Danielle Brown, research director at Gotham Whale, commented on the rarity of the whale sighted in NYC waters, saying, 'It is not clear whether the whale is still in the New York City area. Due to busy holiday travel, it is very possible that the whale…has just not been reported yet.' This highlights the unpredictability of marine life tracking in an urban environment.
Gotham Whale also indicated that several humpback whales, including a pair of a mother and calf, were seen near Spring Lake, New Jersey. This event is crucial, especially as 'most calves are weaning and getting ready to separate from their mothers this time of year,' making them particularly vulnerable to boating and fishing activities in the area.
