The Trump administration's recent decision to end temporary protected status (TPS) for Venezuelans in the U.S. has created anxiety and uncertainty for around 350,000 individuals. Many of whom, like Jesus, fled severe political persecution and security threats in Venezuela. Despite initially securing TPS and thus the ability to live and work legally in the U.S., this abrupt policy change has left them fearing deportation back to an increasingly dangerous regime. The administration claims conditions in Venezuela have improved, a point many affected individuals dispute, stating that they feel persecuted both abroad and at home.
We lived in fear and we are still afraid, said Jesus, who fled Venezuela with his wife and children, crossing through Colombia, the Darien jungle in Panama and then Mexico, before arriving in Texas in 2021.
You can imagine this came as a shock, Jesus said. We suffered a political persecution in our country and now we are doing it here as well.
