Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer emphasized, "We need to reduce our capacities and adjust to new realities," disclosing plans for factory closures and job cuts amid union backlashes.
In response to queries about avoiding factory closures, Schafer stated, "We do not currently see this," showcasing the company's firm stance on necessary downsizing amid rising labor costs.
Schafer noted that while early retirements and severance offers could help reduce workforce size, he believes, "That would simply take too long," advocating for more immediate action to restructure.
Pointing out the competitive landscape, Schafer remarked, "There is no point in dragging out a restructuring until 2035. The competition would have left us behind by then."
