Virgin plots 500m train order in bid to challenge Eurostar's channel tunnel dominance

Phil Whittingham, project leader at Virgin, stated, "We expect the rail regulator to determine if there's enough capacity for one new operator at Temple Mills, but adding a third is unlikely. This is a critical point in our preparations to compete with Eurostar and offers a unique landscape in train services through the Channel Tunnel."

Sir Richard Branson's ambitious plans include a launching date of 2029 for Virgin's Channel Tunnel services. Whittingham emphasized, "It’s a significant investment, and alongside Branson's equity stake, we are evaluating serious partnerships to secure the necessary funding, which we estimate will be close to £1 billion for start-up."
