Virgin Media O2 has announced the first area, Durham, where it will switch off 3G services as part of a larger plan to enhance network efficiency and customer experience.
The UK government, alongside leading mobile operators, aims to shut down all public 2G and 3G networks by 2033, reallocating spectrum for efficient 4G, 5G, and future networks.
The 3G networks currently contribute to less than 3% of all data transmission, and the switch-off will not only improve service but also help reduce energy consumption.
By discontinuing 3G services, Virgin Media O2 aims to enhance speeds and reliability while contributing to broader efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
