The National Gallery's recent exhibition, 'Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers', drew a record 334,589 visitors, making it the most attended ticketed exhibition in the gallery's history. Opened for an extra night to accommodate demand, the exhibit showcased over sixty significant works from Van Gogh, highlighting his imaginative transformations. Its popularity extended to the publication of a catalogue that climbed the 'Sunday Times' Bestseller list. Director Sir Gabriele Finaldi praised the exhibition for presenting Van Gogh's serious artistry alongside his vibrant passion for life, eclipsing previous attendance records of major exhibitions held in the gallery.
'I am delighted that there have been over 330,000 visits to 'Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers'. Van Gogh has become a talisman for passion, authenticity and commitment to his art.'
'The paintings in this exhibition are among his most striking works ... presents Van Gogh as a very serious painter but his 'lust for life', as Irving Stone put it, remains evident and infectious.'
