On February 7, 2025, USAID announced that all direct hire personnel would be placed on administrative leave, with exceptions for critical roles. The agency prepared a transition plan for staff overseas, coordinating with the Department of State for return travel arrangements. Employees will need to obtain permission to access the agency’s premises and systems. Additional exceptions for leave duration, based on individual hardships, are being considered, and guidance will be provided on how to apply for these exceptions.
Essential personnel expected to continue working will be informed by Agency leadership by Thursday, February 6, at 3:00pm (EST).
The Agency will consider case-by-case exceptions and return travel extensions based on personal or family hardship, mobility or safety concerns, or other reasons.
