At the world championships in Austria, Breezy Johnson made history with a record top speed of 86 mph during her downhill run, earning her first major victory. Her impressive jump measured 38 yards, matching men's jumps at a famous Swiss location. Celebrating with the crowd, she expressed joy at having skied her best after years of near misses and a serious injury that sidelined her from the Beijing Olympics. Johnson, who also publicly came out as bisexual, finished ahead of talented competitors Mirjam Puchner and Ester Ledecka, marking a triumphant comeback.
I was psyched because I knew that I had skied my best. I'm just going to enjoy this because I've had a lot of times where I gave my best and I didn't win.
As the victory began to sink in, Johnson grew emotional as she considered the past few years of her career.
The 38 yards that she leaped off the big Panorama jump midway down matched how far the men leap off the famed Hundschopf at Wengen in Switzerland.
Johnson finished 0.15 seconds ahead of silver medalist Mirjam Puchner of Austria and 0.21 ahead of bronze medalist Ester Ledecka.
