The man who faked his own drowning to escape to Eastern Europe, Ryan Borgwardt, has returned to the US after a months-long search and is facing charges.
Law enforcement officials stated that the extensive search operation for Borgwardt, which lasted over 50 days, incurred a cost of $35,000.
Sheriff Mark Podoll expressed relief at Borgwardt's voluntary return, noting it was likely influenced by family ties, while further details of his time abroad remain unclear.
Borgwardt had been seen last in Wisconsin, with his kayak found in a deep lake; he initially led authorities to believe he had drowned.
