The US Supreme Court has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, wanted by India for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He is believed to hold crucial details about the terrorist conspiracy. Rana, a former military doctor, was previously sentenced in the US for terrorism-related offenses. His extradition is seen as a significant move for India in uncovering potential ties between Pakistani elements and the attacks. Rana's legal battles lasted several years, culminating in a denied petition to the Supreme Court, which officially cleared his extradition to India.
"This is a big victory for India because Tahawwur Rana is the person who knows many details of the criminal conspiracy behind the terror attack in Mumbai," lawyer Ujjwal Nikam noted.
Rana was sentenced in the United States in 2013 to 14 years in prison for conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist plot in Denmark.
