Centrus Energy announced a $60 million expansion in Tennessee to grow its manufacturing of high-tech centrifuges for uranium enrichment, as U.S. nuclear power reliance increases.
Centrus President Amir Vexler highlighted the importance of ensuring a domestic supply of nuclear fuel, stating, "Nuclear is one of the key essential stabilizers in our sources on the grid." He emphasized the need for security in fuel supply.
The expansion comes amid growing concerns over dependency on foreign uranium suppliers, particularly following Russia's announcement to limit exports, with Vexler noting, "Why would you not worry about the security of supply of that key ingredient to our grid?"
Centrus is one of several companies enriching uranium in the U.S. to alleviate dependence on foreign suppliers, with current reliance on Russia for about 35% of U.S. imports.
