Security guards at the Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Natural History Museum are going on strike for better wages, amounting to £16 per hour, and improved working conditions. The strike, organized by United Voices of the World (UVW), is set to last throughout February, marking a historic first for the institutions. The union asserts that outsourced security guards deserve sick pay from day one and more benefits compared to museum staff. Wilson James, the contracted security provider, claims to offer competitive pay but seeks a balanced resolution amid the situation.
The workers, who are outsourced to private security contractor Wilson James, are fighting for a pay rise to £16 per hour, sick pay from day one, and full parity with directly employed museum staff, including more annual leave and an annual bonus.
UVW has described the action as 'unprecedented' and 'the longest strike in the history of all three institutions'.
